Youth Empowerment and Employment Creation through Vocational Training
Due to Africa's growing population and the corresponding increase in the population of employable youths, unemployment has steadily been on the rise over the years, reaching a record high of 71 million unemployed youths (International Labor Organization, 2017).
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. -Maimonides
Technical Vocational education and training (TVET) is one of the three main priorities outlined by UNESCO as a tool in tackling youth unemployment in Africa. This training empowers them to become gainfully employed in high-demand trades.
Tailoring
Challenge: Because of the mismatch between available jobs and total number of employable youths, the issue of unemployment has become a constant phenomenon in most African countries.
Solution: Develop Africa is addressing the skill-deficit problem by providing vital training in tailoring, computers and other related skills. Skills are vital for poverty reduction, economic recovery and sustainable development. The trainees are able to learn a marketable and relevant skill.
Computer training
Impact so far: The organization has over the years graduated hundreds of empowered youths through their skill acquisition program in the following skills and training:
- Computer Training
- Sewing / Tailoring
- Baking
- Gara / Tie Dying
- Soap Making
The project contributes to youth development by providing skills for self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
