Progress Update: Develop Africa Computer Lab - Bridging The Digital Divide

The Digital Divide: It is estimated that 80% of the African population does not have regular access to computers because of availability and affordability.  The children, youth and adults in the Wellington community  (a suburb of Freetown, Sierra Leone), one of the communities where Develop Africa works, are disadvantaged and unfortunately part of this demographic.

Computer proficiency is a must in today’s computer-aided / driven society.  On-going access to computers and the internet will open up a world of learning, growth and self-advancement opportunities for the beneficiaries in Wellington. Technology plays a huge role in educating and empowering people for success.  Access to knowledge and information broadens horizons and changes destinies.   This project will help bridge the Digital Divide.

To help bridge this gap, over the past 2 years we have been working towards launching a new computer lab.  The initial challenge was obtaining the space.  This hurdle has been crossed and we now have a designated room - ready for equipping as a computer lab.   Our plans are to set up a modern, fully equipped facility.  The room that will house the computer lab is the largest room in the new Develop Africa building (pictured below) - and when fully furnished will accommodate 42 computers.

Potential Impact:  We estimate that this computer training will benefit over 1000 children, youths and adults in five years. The computer training will also be incorporated into the current After-School Lesson Program.

2014 Progress: So far in 2014, we have purchased and shipped supplies and equipment to network the lab – including a Cisco switch, cabling, server cabinet, etc.

Current Needs: Our current equipment needs for the computer lab are as follows:

  • 42 energy-efficient, Aleutia computers.  Our first Aleutia computer is pictured above in use.
  • 1 energy-efficient projector
  • 1 networked printer / copier
  • Desks and chairs – custom-built locally.
  • Shipping costs to ship the equipment/
  • Solar Panels / Equipment – Equipping the lab with solar panels will significantly reduce day-to-day, running costs such as power from the electrical grid and generator fuel.

Invest into Computer Training: We would like to invite you to invest into the lives of this community by helping us set up this computer lab.

Why is This is a Great Idea:

  • The computer will be used for over 5 years by tens of children, youths and adults with long lasting, maximum impact.
  • We will add a special plaque with your name on the computer and provide photos and a video showing your donated computer in use.  Photos and video will be added to DA's site and Facebook.
  • We will send you a certificate of appreciation that you can frame.
  • Optional) We will list your name on our website recognizing your support.
  • You are more than welcome to visit the lab anytime and will specially recognize your visit.
  • Your donation can be anonymous.

Your donation of any amount will help us make this community dream a reality!  Please help us launch this computer lab.  Thanks for your support!

Families in Sierra Leone face unprecedented challenges due to rising costs. Inflation makes it difficult for them to afford basic food staples such as rice, cooking oil, and onions.

Extending a helping hand can alleviate a significant burden and provide essential relief to the less fortunate.
