Every morning, I wake up, quickly get ready, and then get in my car for the five-minute drive to school. When I think of my daily routine, I see it as dull and rather average for a teenager. But in reality, being able to wake up and go to school so close to my home is a dream that many are not fortunate to have. But, dreams are becoming a reality as online learning becomes increasingly available to African students.
The barriers to education in Africa have always been daunting, but with access to electronic devices, these barriers are being broken down. With platforms like Coursera and Unesco, online education often comes at low or zero cost to those in Africa. And, with the best part about these online courses is their flexibility. Learning at their own pace allows them to balance their studies with work, family obligations, or other personal commitments. Whether accessing a lesson in the early hours or working on an essay late at night, online learning allows students to learn at their own pace to suit their needs.
This flexible option offers students programs in various marketing, business, or coding departments. Choosing what area to specialize in allows students to choose something they are genuinely passionate about. With their newfound knowledge in a specialized area, there is hope for students to go off, find jobs, or even get a higher education.
For many Africans, moving from their homes to larger cities for education can be challenging. However, these online platforms provide access to learning right where they are. Now, they can earn degrees, certificates, and skills without the significant financial and time sacrifices that would have once been necessary.
Moreover, these skills empower the young people in communities to start businesses and impact their communities. Learning how to run a company may create jobs for entire tows, driving growth for everyone involved.
Online learning has proven particularly beneficial for women. They frequently encounter cultural and societal obstacles that bind them to their homes and restrict their access to education. Girls who were once told that school was not a place for them are enjoying the benefits of learning by mastering skills and reshaping their futures and communities. The outdated norms in women's education are diminishing as women continue to thrive with online learning opportunities.
So, it is time to emphasize the role of education in Africans' lives and continue to provide it. Giving Africans access to online education strengthens their opportunities and helps them reach their full potential. With innovation and determination, this digital revolution will transform the lives of teens around the continent and shape the future for generations to come. Education should not just be the norm for teens in America like me; it should be the norm for teens worldwide.
