Develop Africa Newsletter - July 2014

We are always thankful on every remembrance of you.  We are thankful for the role you play whether as a cheer leader / "encourager", field partner, volunteer, team captain, helper, adviser, counselor, donor etc.

One thing is certain - the people we are privileged to serve and DA as an organization would not be where we are without YOU.  You truly are valued and appreciated!

Always remember - what you are doing counts.
You are the reason for someone's smile today! (like Alfred's pictured below)

30 Solar Lights Brighten The Lives of Girls at FAWE School and Make a Difference

The 30 (thirty) solar D-light S300 solar lights pictured are helping the girls at the FAWE school study / do homework at night in Freetown, Sierra Leone.  This is a welcome provision of a safe, reliable light source that they need to read at night - as power supply is irregular.

As Told By Julia:

I was having troubling deciding on a mitzvah project for my Bat Mitzvah.  I knew I wanted to help young girls less fortunate than me.  I knew that equal access to education is the key for girls to have a bright future.

After doing some research I came across an organization called Develop Africa that helps a girls' school in Sierre Leone.  Many of the students at FAWE school don't have electricity at home so they can't read and do homework at night.  This makes it challenging for them to do well in school.  Read more...

Join Elize in Providing Mosquito Nets and Saving Lives!

Have you ever run a marathon?  Marathons can be pretty tough.

Well, Elize, one of DA's supporters, will be running a super unique marathon.  On 17 August - she will attempt to run the World's Highest Ultra Marathon - her 1st Ultra in the Himalayas.

All the athletes will face grueling distances, Oxygen less than 40% of  sea level, temperatures ranging between 40 to -10 degrees, cut off times, altitude above 17 000 feet...  Pretty tough

Elize is asking her friends and all of us to spur her on by donating towards the provision of mosquito nets.  This is one of her motivations as insecticide-treated nets save lives by protecting them from mosquito bites and the killer disease of malaria.  Read more...

Develop Africa Empowerment and Training Institute - Background & Update

In Early 2014, thanks to the help of our many friends locally in Sierra Leone and world-wide, we got to the finishing stages of construction.  We have finished external painting, plumbing etc.  We have also purchased additional furniture for the After-School Lesson Program.  In February 2014, we purchased and shipped supplies / equipment to network the room - including a Cisco switch, cabling, server cabinet, etc.  We are so deeply grateful for each and every one of you who have helped us get this far - supporting this and other programs.

June 2014 Update:

We have installed cabling / wiring for the computer lab - setting up a local area network.  Equipment installed include a Cisco switch.  Read more...

Families in Sierra Leone face unprecedented challenges due to rising costs. Inflation makes it difficult for them to afford basic food staples such as rice, cooking oil, and onions.

Extending a helping hand can alleviate a significant burden and provide essential relief to the less fortunate.
