We often hear of the deprivation and starvation in Africa, but did you know that Africa has the potential to be a major supplier of agricultural goods? Africa has the capability to feed its citizens, and more. Unfortunately, too many African countries lack the leadership necessary to make that happen.

Agriculture was once an abundant commodity in Africa. Agricultural commodities were a major export for most sub-Saharan countries in the late 1960’s. Three decades later these countries were importing millions of tons of food each year. What happened?

African governments stopped prioritizing food production in the 1980's. While most of the developed world was increasing agricultural science funding, African governments reduced funding by 27%. To make matters worse, between 1988 and 2008, foreign aid to African agriculture was reduced drastically. During that time the United States cut agricultural aid to Africa by 75%. By 2008, only 4% of the total development aid that Africa was receiving went towards agriculture.

Leaders willing to invest in agriculture are desperately needed. Government and community leadership and guidance that is focused on restoring the land, improving irrigation and modernizing the farming techniques of small holders could help return struggling African countries to self-sufficiency.

Education plays a key role in the development of leadership skills. Unfortunately, there are many obstacles to getting an education in Africa. We welcome your support towards empowering and boosting education in Africa
