Report On Launching Of FAWE School eReader Project - 12th May 2015

After a meeting with the FAWE school authorities, the launch date for the eReaders was set for 12th May 2015.  This event was scaled down to an internal event due to restrictions on public gatherings - as a result of the Ebola crisis.

FAWE teachers, pupils and board members were present at the launching ceremony.  There were about 80 people in attendance.

The program started with a word of prayer led by the Chairman of FAWE Freetown Branch.  Haja Salamatu Rahman was the chairperson of the program. In her open remarks, she remarked that “Sierra Leone has to keep pace with other nations when it comes to technology”.

Joshua Sandy declared the purpose of the meeting. He emphasized that a new pathway has opened in Sierra Leone that will lead us to creative thinking. The eReaders will help us read more.

The keynote address was given by Janet Tucker who stated that “We need to come out of the old way of reading and to take advantage of technology to improve our lives and expose us to opportunities”. The teachers were admonished to help the kids to take good care of the devices donated to the school.

Joshua Sandy handed 50 eReaders to the school Head Teacher Jandae Keneth accompanied by cheers of all present.  Marion Mansaray a class six pupil demonstrated how to use a eReader to the attendees.  Jandae Keneth, the head teacher, thanked World Reader for the donation and asked that more of the device be presented to the school in the near future.

When the program was televised on the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation Television, up to 17 school head teachers asked for this program to be extended to their schools. They stated that they would very much like to be a part of the digital reading revolution.

I want to join the various voices in Sierra Leone to thank World Reader for the devices presented to FAWE Primary School. With your continued support Sierra Leone will “go digital”.

Families in Sierra Leone face unprecedented challenges due to rising costs. Inflation makes it difficult for them to afford basic food staples such as rice, cooking oil, and onions.

Extending a helping hand can alleviate a significant burden and provide essential relief to the less fortunate.
